Backbone State Park,the first state park in Iowa, dedicated in 1920, is "the Yellowstone of Iowa." Named for its narrow and steep ridge of bedrock carved by a loop of the Maquoketa River,is a nature lover's paradise. Consisting of 2,001 acres, Backbone is home to a wide variety of wildlife and provides many means of recreation to visitors such as trout fishing, backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing and picnics.
