This church is one of 3 churches in the U.S. commissioned to be built by Mrs. Frances Vinton of Providence, R.I.. She gave the gift in 1867 in memory of a son, Elisha, and a daughter, Carolyn, who died in their youth. The other two churches are in San Gabriel, CA and Providence, R.I. She believed Clermont to be the geographical center of the U.S. and chose it in keeping with the Bible verse, "Thy praise shall ring from shore to shore".
