Bored? Impossible! From eastern European culture to
life on a fort, our indoor and outdoor museums take you a
step back in time. Come and learn of Norwegian immigrant
life or get a glimpse of the way Laura Ingalls Wilder live
in the 1850's. View a collection of hand-carved musical
clocks or take a self-guided tour through the historic
district of Decorah and view examples of Midwestern
architecture listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. Or perhaps you'd like to stroll through the
gardens of a living museum nestled among sparkling
streams, limestone bluffs, and century-old white
pinewoods.
Winneshiek County is synonymous with novelty
attractions. It is renowned as being the home of
America’s oldest and most comprehensive museum devoted
to a single ethnic group. The Vesterheim Norwegian-
American Museum complex includes 13 historic buildings,
costumes, furniture, decorative and fine arts depicting
Norwegian immigrant life. And where else in the Midwest
can you find tasty Norwegian cuisine on a daily basis?
Your trip would not be complete without seeing our
extensive display of gardens, known throughout the
Midwest. Displays include over 20,000 varieties of rare
vegetables, flowers, perennials, apples, grapes, and
potted plants. And then of course you could discover the
most up-to-date techniques in dairy farming or perhaps
tour the state-of-the art trout rearing stream.
You just never know what you’ll find in Winneshiek
County. Don’t miss it!
